I’m struck by two (probably banal) things. 1. A few days after I’ve written something, I often find I’ve lost a feel for it; I can’t see it clearly. At these moments I find (trusted) outside eyes helpful. 2. I also love swimming.

not banal at all! for other kinds of writing I do very much rely on a second, if not a third or fourth pair of eyes. the crux of this public diary is to figure out a way to publish without such external assurance, which it seems to me resides in the event, or experience of writing. a diary demands a peculiar attitude unlike that required for an essay or an academic paper (other forms which I'm familiar with), an attitude which is highly unnatural to a neurotic like myself. This attitude has something in common with the attitude of a competent swimmer (which is the same as that of a yogi), namely that of ceding control and letting the mind/body work at its natural pace.
