“Television is like the sun, while cinema is like the moon: one a ray beamed at our face, the other a silvery reflection whose source remains in the projector-room behind us.”
perhaps a touch of ressentiment in godard's condescension towards americans? he is punishing them for ceasing to pay adequate attention to any of his works made beyond the 60s
idk anyone as obnoxious as godard desired attention; as per your newest piece, his contemporary analogue is not the blue-check but the agent-of-chaos anon (preferable), galvanized by cultivating irritation or confusion as readily as insight
yes but there’s also this, again in contemporary parlance, ‘autistic’ aspect to him where he seemed to be doing things on dogged principle. he was a provocateur but also a recluse. His anti-Americanism was part of a general French post-war anti-Americanism (the overtaking of the French cinema industry by Hollywood), anti-imperialism and anti-consumerism that was consistent with his political and artistic principles.
First time I have been interested in Godard.

Beautiful

I don’t think Godard ever cared much for attention, whether popular or critical, beyond what was necessary for him to continue working.
